EU Blue Card for Germany: Requirements and Benefits

The EU Blue Card is Germany's premium residence title for university graduates – and for most qualified professionals the best option on the table. Here is what it takes and what you get.

The requirements

You need a recognised university degree (checked via anabin/ZAB) and a job offer with a gross annual salary above the current threshold. For shortage occupations – IT and communications technology, engineering, medicine, natural sciences and mathematics – a significantly reduced threshold applies; recent graduates also benefit from lower limits. The thresholds are adjusted every year, so check the current figures or ask us for the numbers that apply to your start date.

What makes the Blue Card special

Permanent residency fast: after 27 months, or just 21 months with German at B1 level – faster than any other work title. Family reunification: your spouse gets a work permit without restrictions and without a German test before arrival. EU mobility: after 12 months you can move to another EU country under simplified rules. Losing your job does not immediately end your residence – you get time to find a new position.

Blue Card or Skilled Worker Visa?

If your salary is below the Blue Card threshold, the Skilled Worker Visa (§ 18b) is the fallback – same job, different title, slower path to permanent residency. The application in practice

The employer-driven fast-track procedure (§ 81a) is the biggest lever: the immigration office pre-approves your case, the embassy appointment comes weeks earlier.
