Work Permit in Germany: The Complete Guide

Germany actively recruits international professionals – but you need the right residence title before you start working. This guide explains the main routes for non-EU citizens, in plain English.

The main visa routes at a glance

EU Blue Card: for university graduates with a recognised degree and a job offer above the salary threshold (reduced for shortage occupations such as IT, engineering and medicine). Fastest path to permanent residency.

Skilled Worker Visa (§ 18a/18b AufenthG): for people with a recognised university degree or recognised vocational training. No fixed salary threshold, but pay must be in line with the market.

IT specialist rule (§ 6 BeschV): experienced developers without a formal degree can qualify with several years of professional experience and a defined minimum salary. German is not required.

Recognition of your qualification

Whether your degree counts is checked against the anabin database; if your university is not clearly listed, you need a Statement of Comparability (ZAB). For regulated professions – nurses, doctors, teachers – full professional recognition is required. Clarify this before signing an employment contract; it determines your visa route and timeline.
